   It’s another very good action movie on Netflix. The rise and fall of Brian De Palma’s Scarface resonate with the performance of Al Pacino – sometimes aggressive, sometimes over the top, teeth-gnashing, and scenery-chewing. While most people find it brilliant, there are some who find this movie unforgivably flamboyant. And to most of the detractors’ hopes who prayed for Pacino’s role to be internal and a really low key; the Tony Montana of this movie is above all, a performance character, a man who existed gloriously just to be himself. And you know what? Al Pacino does wonder with his role (maybe no surprises here).

   From the opening to the closing shots, Montana (and eventually Pacino) drives to impress his personality and impose his wills on others. He starts his journey with no weapons, no resources, except for his charisma of faking other powerful men by merely seeming resourceful and dangerous. This character of the bluff needed no-nonsense play and who other than Al Pacino for the role. Montana is a character who has inspired and shaped personal styles for countless other people. And according to Jay Robert Nash, a crime expert, early Hollywood crime films influenced American gangsters to talk and behave, then well the preceding sentence bears no flaw. Scarface has been too often borrowed into other situations and the plot that it is tough to understand how original the movie was back when it was released for the first time, the time when Latin actors were rare, when sequences of the final gun battle were not a cliché and when cocaine was not a commonplace. Unlike most gangster movies that are more focused on action than personality, Scarface is the film which is willing to take the flaws and evils in a man and still allow him to be a human.

   Scarface is a cult classic with, maybe, one of the most famous echoes from any of the gangster movies – “Say hello to my little friend.” If you are from the early 90s and even younger, then you might never know how original the movies were in the past if you don’t watch Scarface. Now either do watch the film or pretend to have watched it.

V for Vendetta not only has the ambition to excite but also to inspire its viewers. In a draconian future, a masked man V who is mysteriously full of vengeance, speaks about liberty and integrity. The idea he presents is vague, but the plans he makes are very specific – they involve dynamite explosion. Unlike other rebellious movies which have no convincing conclusion, V for Vendetta stands out – it has a finite purity of spirit.

   V is always seen wearing a mask, and neither he nor the film-makers show what’s behind the mask. And this is a decision everyone should respect because the mask is just an anonymous representation of the fury of ordinary people who have grown frustrated with the political or social failure. Natalie Portman stars as Evey Hammond who is a critical image of humanity in V played by Hugo Weaving. Even though the ideas presented in the movie are muddled, the movie is quite a thrill to watch.  Remember, remember! The fifth of November.

   Stanley Kubrick, more than any other American director, pays little focus to the on-going fashion, keeping to his ways to create fantastic visions that, in one way or another, are the displaced extensions of the society we know but don’t want to recognize. Full Metal Jacket is a beautiful but harrowing eccentric view about Vietnam eccentrically that will puzzle, anger and fascinate viewers. Whenever you think that you can now relax with the storyline, some insane image or event will wave around to position itself in mind and interrupts the emotions – this movie plots series of exploding boomerangs.

   The film imparts quite an astonishing thought: The only thing worse than a disorder in the universe is not to recognize it. Virtually the order of the movie is the disorder, where the central character, Private Joker played by Matthew Modine, the narrator of the story, wears a symbol of peace on his battle fatigues and the slogan “Born to Kill” on his helmet.

   We can find disorder in the structure of the movie itself, as Full Metal Jacket can be divided into two facets. On first look, these parts may seem so different to each other tone wise, and we may even get the feeling that these two parts have been made by two different directors, two distinct camera operators covering two separate screenplays; only the actors being the same. Full Metal Jacket not only provided an apex to Modine’s career, but it also builds its situation for being one of the best war movies to have been ever made.

   You can say that Quentin Tarantino believes, with full confidence, in what he is doing and this character is the best as well as the worst thing about Tarantino. Sometimes his belief will disorganize the plot and ultimately the film as in Death Proof, but in most cases, has produced wonders like Pulp Fiction and Inglourious Basterds. Django Unchained lies somewhere in the middle; however, it is his most ambitious one, and that means quite a lot for a director of his stature.

   This movie highlights his style of mixing violence and humor, where the main protagonist, Django (Jamie Foxx) is unchained by a dentist cum bounty hunter Dr. King Schultz (Christoph Waltz) so that Django could help him track down the three outlaw brothers. In addition to the freedom of Django himself, he is assured of the freedom of his wife from a plantation owner Calvin Candice (Leonardo DiCaprio). While all of them played their characters beautifully, DiCaprio and Samuel L. Jackson (as Stephen, the head slave of Calvin) stood out on their performance. This movie is successful in paying homage to the spaghetti western inspiration and disorganizing the source content with sharp performances, poignant brutality, as well as fascinating characters.

But it didn’t stop Gibson from using this as the last cry, and boy this helped! Because it aids to the grand sweep of the Braveheart, a swordplay vintage in Hollywood. The battle scenes from the film, which are quite frequent and violent, are going to be forever remembered by the viewers because it does a brilliant job of assembling men and horses in the war scene of large scale and is technically a top fit.

   And for those who are still not motivated to watch this movie, there is a fact about the film that must be shared – Braveheart was nominated for 10 Academy Awards and won in 5 of them.    Ridley Scott, a man of visual panache, makes everything in this movie utterly glorious and presents the events on a candidly grand canvas of strained light and vintage landscapes. Equally good is the cinematography, which depicts the flesh-tearing and bone-crushing horrors of the clash and the Royal immorality of second-century Rome in an unusual manner. It is one of the most exciting animated movies of Disney which retells an ancient folktale of China about a young woman who disguises as a man and battles against the enemies in place of her disabled father so that he could not get killed in the war. These actions raise her to the rank of heroic figure. The ancestors of Mulan who are watching over her send a dragon called Mushu to stop Mulan from fighting in the war. Mushu could not persuade her to pull out of the war, however, and so, decides to assist her in the fierce battle instead.

Not each of these featured dancers gets to win some big prizes, but given the sear dedication and labor (not to forget the painful injuries) these children have put on, they are definitely all winners.

   First, Position makes you believe that pure dedication and hard work is the ultimate pathway to success – a lesson which can inspire children of all ages. The undeviating focus of the kids will be more relatable to the teens; however, even the younger kids will find this movie enjoyable and inspiring. When the movie is over, you will not remember so much about the characters that won and that lost.    Tarzan is clearly one of the best Disney movies of all time, because of its solid narrative, and excellent soundtrack, also because Tarzan reflects a myth, a notion that this planet is a common ground for all the humans and the animals. On the surface, the movie is about adventures, comedy, and movement, but underneath it, is something different something serious.    Fantasia was a flop when it hit the theaters in 1940 (followed the path that early Disney film paved. Actually, three of the five first movies failed miserably at the box office).    Microcosmos, directed by Claude Nuridsany and Marie Pérennou, is a documentary which provides a closer look over at the insect world using microscopic cameras. Battle of the beetles, spider hunting the preys, flowers blooming and snails kissing are captured very detailly and smaller kids, being the close observers of the ants, caterpillars, spiders, and butterflies since their childhood, find this movie stunning and fascinating. The narration is very brief at the beginning of the movie, and the complete scenario is a trip through thriving landscapes that capture the insect world business.

   This movie is a work of creativity and fancy as much as the one of science. Although using the only a handful of words, Microcosmos is generous in its sense of music and sound effects which dramatizes the relentless struggle for survival going on in pastureland in France. Drago Bludvist, a cruel tyrant, seeks to defeat the world, and Hiccup and Toothless with other friends will have to fight not only Drago himself but also his ruthless army of men and dragons. Jay Baruchel voices Hiccup, Randy Thom, voices Toothless whereas Djimon Hounsou voices Drago. To be honest, both parts of How to Train Your Dragon is a must watch for the kids and family (if available on Netflix).

Judy, the first rabbit in the police department quickly come across the difficulties in implementing rules in Zootopia, a land of various cultures and customs. She takes up a weird case to prove herself, and in this journey, she is assisted (troubled, whatever you call) by Nick Wilde, a clever fox.

    What kids will learn from this movie is the importance of tender friendships, teamwork, and the unity in diversity, the pop music interludes and some witty jokes are the trademarks of this movie. This movie follows two poverty-stricken siblings Ali and Zahra after the brother loses the pink shoes of his sister in the market. Then they decide to share Ali’s shoes so that their parents who are already struggling with the financial problems would not have to worry about one more thing. Ali participates in the footrace for the poor kids of the quarter so that he could win the third prize for a new pair of sneakers which he would give to his sister. He doesn’t care about the first prize or the second; he desperately wants to be placed third.

    The race and its result will be as rousing for most of the kids as anything they have ever witnessed in the movies. Children of Heaven lacks the smart-mouth attitudes and the cynicism of the American entertainment for the children these days, and glimmers with a good-hearted purity. Two Mexican teenagers Julio and Tenoch, one from a middle-class family, another from rich, are free when their girls go to Europe in the summer. They meet Luisa, the wife of a distant cousin and ten years older than them, at a wedding. After her husband cheats on her, Luisa unexpectedly agrees to go on a trip to Heaven’s Mouth, the legendary beach, as proposed by the boys. The two boys and a sexy and playful woman set out for this journey together where they will find out that they are not the only ones who are keeping secrets. This unconventional movie from Alfonso Cuarón contains vibrant and tender sexual nature which makes this one of the most thriving road films to have ever been made.

   Atonement, based on one grand novel by Ian McEwan of the same name, brings to us the heart tearing romance between an upper-class woman Cecilia Tallis (Keira Knightley), who is living in an English country house some years before the Second World War begins, and Robbie Turner (James McAvoy), the son of a helper working for the Tallis. In this complex love story between two repelling classes, there is another problem too – Briony (Saoirse Ronan), Cecilia’s cousin sister who also happens to have a teenage crush on Robbie. Briony, a 13-year-old, witnesses something she misunderstands because of her mixed reactions of shock and jealousy, tells a lie which destroys every possibility of joy in all three lives, which includes herself too. Atonement begins with joyous delicate wings and slowly sinks to an abyss of loss and tragedy. Joe Wright, the director, has a story in the McEwan novel which can hardly fail him, an ending which bemuses us with its indication and a cast that portrays the real emotions and elegance into the characters. This was meant to be a successful film, and rightly so. After watching the movie, you will be forced to question yourself – what do betrayal and atonement necessitate?

6. Moonrise Kingdom (2012)

   Wes Anderson, the director picks the nostalgic spirit of the East Coast Scout expeditions for this eccentric, symmetric and pubescent romantic comedy. The cucumber-cool Sam Shakusky (Jared Gilman) makes his way to an amorous sojourn into the wastelands with his mercurial lady love Suzy Bishop (Kara Hayward) after a break away from his weekend ensemble trip, and this makes the adult world to make a worried search for them. Anderson creates contrast on their simple and immediate love with a composite triangle circumscribing Laura Bishop (Frances McDormand), her husband Walt Bishop (Bill Murray) and a semi-depressed Captain Sharp (Bruce Willis). The director delights in every of his tiny triviality for creating an exacting summer fantasy and young love. The Moonrise Kingdom weaves a series of events to create a world driven by desires and emotions, which plots back to 1965, but the greatness is that this might as well be placed at any time and the aura remains the same. The movie is filled with definitive and active colors converting it to a soothing canvas of magical realism where we can find elegant and formal brilliance and various gentle but winning comedy. The understated gravity in the story makes us more involved in the fantasy world the Moonrise Kingdom creates.

   What is first love? Well, for everybody it’s quite the same – wet, fucked up and messes but the worst of it all, unforgettable. Blue Is the Warmest Color is as unforgettable as the topic it covers. The harrowing performances of Adèle Exarchopoulos and Léa Seydoux drive this movie to the frank but uncomfortable annals of a young girl’s (Exarchopoulos) journey of self-disclosure. And along the path, she falls in love and begins a lingering relation with another girl (Seydoux), you will get to witness this puppy love grow into the open water beyond the honeymoon phase (or, whatever you name it!). You can’t let this familiar premise fool you, because the winner of The Palme d’Or which is the highest prize awarded at the Cannes Film Festival, is not straggly adult fare. Blue Is the Warmest Color is a vivid portrayal of the obsessive attachment, pain, and the zeal of the first love – and the void you are left with when this love is taken away from you. Abdellatif Kechiche’s movie starts with an imposing question – “How do you understand that the heart us missing something?” the answer you will get during the movie is emotionally shattering in this reflection of ecstasy and agony of real love. Based on Julie Maroh’s novel, it is the best comic-book film of the year having an excellent moving story.

   Out of many movies that the great Woody Allen made over the years, Annie Hall most probably is his masterpiece. Woody Allen himself stars in the movie as Alvy Singer and Diane Keaton stars as Annie Hall, the main protagonist. This movie won Oscars for Best Original Screenplay, Best Director, Best Actress (Keaton), Best Picture, and it did something which is unthinkable today, edging out the Star Wars to win the Oscars for Best Picture in 1977. Alvy Singer is a TV writer having a strange viewpoint on life; he falls in love with a Midwestern woman, they date, but it did not seem to work, and thus, Alvy follows down a path of examining and questioning the way of life and a need for understanding. Annie Hall is an intelligent, unique, and amusing movie that has a poignant look at the highs and lows of a relationship and its effects on people. The greatness of this movie is its realism, quirkiness, and idiosyncrasy which reflects the sheer emotions coming from personal experiences. Central performances from Allen and Keaton deftly maps out the shift of the couple from the initial delving to terminal unreliability. Keaton stands out in this romantic comedy, but Allen cannot be overlooked as an actor because of his brilliant handling of Alvy’s insecurity, his sensitivity, and twisting. This remarkable restoration of an exhausted love affair is both melancholic and hysterically funny, there is abundant pain within the movie but the bountiful comedy sutures the raw edges.

In this movie, the vile persons are outplayed, true love overshadows perfidy, and a small boy realizes the power of pure imagination. This enchanting movie is a doughty romantic fantasy with sheer charm and superb humor which is hatched as a tale within a tale. It begins with a garrulous old grandfather (Peter Falk) making a visit to his sick 10-year-old grandson (Fred Savage). This new generation kid wants none of his Grandpa’s jolly bluster or his moldy book that bewitched boys from earlier generations in his family. But you can’t stop an old man from soothing (as per them) a sick child in the family. Can you? So, this prevailing grandfather reads aloud his stories about the behemoths, chases, escapes, pure love, and miracles, and briskly the kid is won over. The Princess Bride is an oft-told story about a lovely maiden Buttercup (Robin Wright) and her endearment for Westley (Cary Elwes), the boy from the ranch who is too pleased just to wish her with “as you wish”. Their estrangement takes this story to the presumed death of Westley at the hand of marauders, the engagement of Buttercup with treacherous Prince Humperdinck (Chris Sarandon) and a valiant rescue mission. The adventure that follows is always gripping but what’s more, fun is the expressive dialogues in the movie, splendid performances from all the characters and the prolific cinematography of Adrian Biddle.

   The Princess Bride is an enchanting classic where you are free to giggle or be thrilled, as per your wish, and a masterwork which an entire family will love to watch!!

    Amélie by Jean-Pierre Jeunet is a mouth-watering tart of a movie, a carefree fantasy in which an appealing protagonist overcomes her sad childhood to grow up into an altruist person and in becoming so provides much need joy to herself as well. When you think about this build-up later, you are surely going to smile. Audrey Tautou, a fresh face plays the role of the title character, the girl who starved for affection from her early days. Amélie, the waitress on a mission, assembles several schemes to utilize joy from strangers for making life happier of those surrounding her until when she realizes, it is she who needs a tonic for herself. The film is not suited for everyone. Even Cannes Film Festival rejected it from screening because some programmers tagged it “uninteresting”. Though being dismissed for being too mawkish, the film was able to conjure more than 30 million US dollars at the box office and making Amélie the most successful French movie on the American market. It is extremely hard to not tumble under a strong spell of this batty romance because Amélie is one of the once-in-a-decade romance comedies that scatters its glow like the pearls from a shattered necklace.

    Cinema Paradiso is what every director dreams of, for Giuseppe Tornatore – making that one great movie which will serve as his love letter to the artistic cinematic universe. Though the movie commences in the 80s, most of it is shown as a flashback of a filmmaker Toto who recalls the moments of his childhood when he fell in love with the movies and that friendship with Alfredo, the theater projectionist at the Cinema Paradiso. The greatness of this movie is appropriately reflecting the art of filmmaking and editing by incorporating this as its main story. To be honest, the movie bombed in its original Italian format at the box office, which was initially 155 minutes long but when it was released internationally, editor cut-off 31 minutes of it and it was an instant hit. This shorter version earned a Special Jury Prize at Cannes and won the Oscars for Best Foreign Language Film in 1990.

   When Disney announced the live-action remake of some of its classic animated movies for the first time, it was not enough to get us all excited because these stories have been read to us or by us for ages, we have seen various cartoons or animated series of the same. But to ours’ surprise, we have been impressed till now, and It’s hard to complain with The Jungle Book leading the pack. Director Jon Favreau has brought back life into this ancient story with a new thematic depth; he presents to us a rich and detailed world to explore. The cast of actors recruited for providing a voice to the vivid characters is universally excellent, and there is no reason not to be impressed with it. The Jungle Book features Scarlett Johansson, Idris Elba, Bill Murray, Christopher Walken, and Ben Kingsley (a dream come true?), all playing big roles, and none showing any less enthusiasm. The Jungle Book is a powerful movie that symbolizes what to expect from Disney in the days to come.

2. Boyhood (2014)

   When Boyhood was released in 2014, there were mixed opinions, a huge group of people who believed that it is the best movie of the year and another pretty intense backlash which labelled it ‘overrated and overlong.’ But whatever the fuss is, it is a must-watch for all the courage the filmmakers have shown and for the interesting experimentation achieved. Richard Linklater has filmed the movie over the course of Eleven long years, a film where you can see Ellar Coltrane, the main character grow up over the movie period, you can also see his parents (Patricia Arquette and Ethan Hawke) getting aged from a young couple to estranged old people. Watching the characters in the movie age is not what you often get, every other movie you watched used some special effects or cast multiple actors for the same role to present their ageing.

Of all the achievements of Linklater, possibly he will be best remembered for his powerful depiction of time in this movie. Boyhood is intense in such a natural way that the weighty themes of the storyline feel complacent and effortless and It might make you sob for reasons you don’t know. Gore Verbinski’s Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl is grand not only regarding sword fights and the top-notch cast but also the plot is honestly brilliant, and you will feel like you have had one of your best adventures of two-and-a-half-hour.

   Captain Jack Sparrow arrives without a ship or crew at Port Royal in the Caribbean but at an inopportune time, for a pirate ship besieging the town later in that evening. These pirates captured Elizabeth (Keira Knightley), the daughter of the governor because she possesses a valuable coin which is linked with a curse of transforming the pirates into the undead. A brave blacksmith Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) who is in love with Elizabeth join forces with Sparrow to pursue the pirates.

   Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl sweeps the viewers into a quest unlike any other through a gorgeous damsel in distress, a spunky rogue as her saviour, and a different unit of bloodthirsty swashbucklers to provide the aura.

The plot is set in the 80s where the Director and Screenplay writer John Carney follows an Irish boy who forms a band just to impress a girl. In their journey of writing original music, they cover the broad trends of that decade – with songs which sound like Duran Duran and like The Cure. Sing Street is a story about young love and finding out who you are without separating oneself from the harsh realities of life. The songs in here are genuinely great, and the performances are incredible (you cannot miss Lucy Boynton in here).

   It also represents the musical environment in the 80s where you Rock n Roll was a risk, a risk of being ridiculed, and this perfectly describes the scenario for a sweet and spirited dramedy like this.    Darren Aronofsky, the director, is known for his many talents, but what he has shown through Requiem for a Dream is that he is also magnificent at putting together the throbbing and powerful sequences in the movie that are acute enough to give the viewers a nervous breakdown. An obsession drives the characters in here, and following them on this story can be a harrowing experience. Requiem for a Dream is all about the drug addiction and devastating effects it can have on our psyches and our bodies. Jared Leto (you know the Joker? Yes, right, there can be only one Joker, and you all know who I am talking about), and Jennifer Connelly are good in their roles of drug-addicted couples, but Ellen Burstyn nails her role as the mother; a prisoner in her apartment and someone who is cut in between her diet pills (you may also observe that she is addicted to the TV and sugar, however.) – her performance is absolutely electric, haunting, and unforgettable.

   Aronofsky uses the camera to fascinatingly capture how the characters see things, and this is very much comparable to Hitchcock, where it is not only important to show us the things but also to deny the others. At one moment, we are thrust into subjective state and immediately in the next moment; we are plunged back to objectivity by a cold splash of reality. Requiem for a Dream is a movie to be watched, you may have been told that it is a film which you can handle to watch only once, but Nah, there is so much awesome filmmaking in here that you can always have an immense pleasure by revisiting the misery shown here.

It is the story of a little kid, outcast Cole who sees and interacts with dead people, ghosts as you would like us to say. He had to visit a child psychologist regularly to help himself understand and deal with his visions. Superficially, The Sixth Sense is a creepy, freaky movie, at least in its premise but once you are into the plot, it is hardly about the ghosts. It is more about the characters of those with unresolved problems who are trying to perceive each other. It has one of the best plot twists on the movie – make sure you don’t google it because there are spoilers everywhere!

   The Sixth Sense was nominated for six Oscars in 2000 but were up against some stiff competition – the only reason we can think of why it didn’t win one. And as always Bruce Willis has done a pretty good job in his role.

3. Good Will Hunting (1997)

   Written by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, two practically unknown writers/actors at the time, Good Will Hunting puts Ben Affleck and Matt Damon on the map through their quantum leap role as best friends. In the movie, Matt Damon stars as Will who is a troubled janitor at MIT in his early 20’s and stuck in blue-collar life with Chuckie Sullivan (Ben Affleck). Good Will Hunting is a story of a self-taught boy capable of solving one of the world’s most difficult algorithm posted by the Math’s Professor for his graduate students while he was working his night shift at the college. The professor wants him to study Mathematics in MIT but as he was on the wrong side of his tracks, had to consult an oft-clichéd psychologist and professor at Bunker Hill Community College, Sean Maguire (Robin Williams), after multiple failed treatments from other therapists because of Will’s ego and attitude. After weeks of his work, Sean is ultimately able to break down the barriers in Will’s attitude, persuading Will to love, trust and aim towards new goals which he quickly realizes later. The movie covers quite outstandingly the heart-pinching field like childhood abuse and heartbreak, the witty banter and humor are also equally memorable, however. Good Will Hunting did outstanding business both domestically and overseas – a movie with a budget of 10 Million dollars bagged 225 Million dollars worldwide. The movie was nominated for nine Academy Awards and bagged two of them despite being against Titanic, probably the best movies of the 90s. No shame here!

   Robin Williams does wonder once again in his role and grabbed Oscars for his supporting role, and Ben Affleck and Matt Damon won it for their original screenplay – what a start for these virtually unknown. The movie is effortlessly pleasing and never overwrought.

   For those who have not seen Good Will Hunting, well congratulations! You have got yourself a plan for tonight. Robin Williams – gone but never forgotten. Rest in Peace!!

4. Inglourious Basterds

   Directed and written by the great but controversial Quentin Tarantino, this movie Inglourious Basterds interlaces two stories of vengeance against the Nazis during the World War II in France which was then occupied by Germans. Lt. Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt) steers a group of few American Jews through the countryside in France, killing the German forces and Nazis on the way. Meanwhile, a French theatre owner, Shosanna (Melanie Laurent) plays to murder Nazi leaders. At the same time, Col. Hans Landa (Christoph Waltz) who is well known as the “Jew Hunter” around the area, tries to hunt down the Aldo Raine and his team. Inglourious Basterds has paved the path for the rise of Christoph Waltz, or is it? It can be clearly seen that the process is mutual. Tarantino has set up a very good story in Inglourious Basterds, but without Waltz’s weird, vindictive and quirky nature this would just be another ordinary movie. But, this is Tarantino, he doesn’t create ordinary movies, right? (three more Tarantino movies are listed in Best Action Movies on Netflix in another section, make sure you visit that too.)

   Inglourious Basterds is a violent movie, and times you (if you are faint-hearted) may want to look away but come on, this is Tarantino, he is best at what he does, and he does it most of the times. And a little more to add, he, however, go over the top so that the fighting and violent scenes are moved to the point where it is funny.

   This movie was nominated for eight Oscars at the Academy Awards in 2010 where Waltz was able to grab the Oscars for Best Supporting Actor. One hell of a job he did in here!!

5. Titanic

   Here is a movie for you all – Near, far, wherever you are, and for the freaks of ’90s Netflix is pouring all the blessings with classic hits like the films on this list and Titanic, well your prayers of nostalgia have not only been heard but answered as well. Titanic, an epic from James Cameron is one of the highest-grossing movies and does it get better than this? Well, its really very hard to answer that because there might be no answer or let’s just say the answer can simply be NO! to get into some numbers let some numbers put light into the greatness of this movie – Most expensive movie at the time, and a market collection of more than 2 billion dollars worldwide, one of the most critically acclaimed movies in history with 11 Oscars in 1998 among 14 nominations made. James Cameron does an extremely fantastic work of adding some romance and tragedy to the already tragic reality of Titanic, the ‘indestructible’ ship. A love story of Rose (Kate Winslet) and Jack (DiCaprio, yes, the Titanic guy) on the voyage to New York from England is incredible, given the circumstances.

   Jack O Jack!!

   This one is a very great movie to watch with your girl but please don’t ask her this – Wasn’t there enough space on that plank for two persons?

6. The Shining

   The Shining is a psychotropic adjustment of a horror novel of the same name which was written by Stephen King and rumor has this – King hates this altercation because of the director Stanley Kubrick too many liberties on this movie. With a heavy heart, all we can say is sorry to Mr. King because what Kubrick did was shot a classic and probably the best horror movie to have ever been made. In the movie, Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) along with his wife and son moves into one remote hotel to provide guardianship for it over the winter period. Jack who is a writer himself plans to use this quiet time to work on his new book, but after his family gets trapped in the hotel by a terrible snowstorm, the story takes a new turn. The supernatural forces or ghosts haunt the hotel, and this will cause Jack, an alcoholic, to lose his mind. What’s classic in the movie? The ample silence and an oozing sense of trepidation, the director seize the sheer terror of his viewers – the twins, the pages of “All Work and No Play”, the wave of blood, and leaves the clarification deadpan. Jack Nicholson’s growling execution of the dialogues will forever hunt like a hungry wolf. Two words enough to showcase this – Here’s Johnny!

   If you haven’t seen this movie already, you have to watch it. This is one of the good movies 2017. It’s really terrific.

7. No Country for Old Men

   Based on a book by Cormac McCarthy of the same name and published in 2005 is this masterly adaptation by Coen Brothers which won four Oscars at the Academy Awards in 2008. The movie starts with the flat and confiding voice of Sheriff Ed Tom (Tommy Lee Jones), where he describes a teenage murderer who killed his 14 years old girlfriend, he once sent for execution. The newspapers described this as a crime of passion, but he tells the sheriff it was more than just passion.

   This description which sets up the entire story is what you should never miss in the movie for its perfect delivery containing vocal precision and extraordinary emotions. No Country for Old Men is a violent, gripping, poetic, thrilling and blackly humorous: something that Coen Brothers always do best. Added to this list is humanity which has been an important part of this movie. Anton Chigurh (Javier Bardem) is a merciless evil man, tall with black hair and a petrifying smile, who carries a tank of compressed air and kills people with a cattle stun gun while travelling through Texas. There are three strands in this twisted plot, Chigurh being one. The next one is Sheriff Ed (Tommy Lee) himself who divulges a master actor at the top of his game, and the third major character is Llewelyn Moss (Josh Brolin) who is a poor man living in his house trailer with his wife. One day while hunting, Moss comes across a failed drug deal where every dealer is dead (and even the dog), he finds a briefcase with more than 2 million dollars and yes, Chigurh is on the hunt for recovering the lost money.

   McCarthy reveals in his story a soulless America which is no country for anybody, never mind old men. No Country for Old Men is an in-depth study which is rich with metaphors and details and clearly ranks as one of the best movies of the 21st century.

8. The Prestige

   The Prestige starts like a camera which is completely out of focus, nothing making any sense, it rolls backwards and forwards through the time like Christopher Nolan, the director is having a Memento flashback. Characters in the movie wander here and there in the plot, and you will feel like this movie will go above your head, then the things start getting more logical. The out of focus movie as it felt earlier starts to become clearer bit by bit and by the end, you will be like – Have I just watched one movie to remember for a long long time? The Prestige is a movie which you will hate before you love it, it is that kind of movie which will make you confused, irritated, frustrated, exasperated but by the time it’s over, you will have all but praise for this movie. The ensemble of this movie is monumental, but Hugh Jackman as Robert Angier and Christian Bale as Alfred Borden shine the brightest as a genius duelling magicians. Both Jackman and Bale had to work on multiple levels but absolutely nailed it through their dynamic performance. There are twists and turns but keeping in mind that this is a story about magicians, it is no shocker (but to be honest, there is no ignominy in being amazed). The entire plot itself is outlined in the inaugurating scene, as John Cutter (Michael Caine) explains the three keys to a good magic trick: “The Pledge”, “The Turn”, and “The Prestige”.

   But if the film is only to awestruck the audience, it is like an empty vessel, and The Prestige stands out as one of the most emotionally pacifying films of Nolan. With Angier and Borden, we have two characters who are driven by the sheer desire of becoming successful magicians and truly memorable. Their rivalry grows more desperate and vicious, with the magical skill not only being used to mesmerize the audience but also to wreak havoc on each other and in this journey Nolan expertly transmits the emotional drive for both the character among the audiences.

9.  Forrest Gump

   At times when you are watching this movie, you may come up with a question – Is there a movie that is more quotable than Forrest Gump? Because almost all the lines from Forrest (Tom Hanks) in the movie are absolutely great quotes. Some of the dialogues from the movie that are forever worthy are: “Stupid is as stupid does.”

   “My mama always said, ‘Life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.’”

   “I’m not a smart man. But I *know* what love is.”

   “Dear God, make me a bird. So, I could fly far. Far far away from here.”

   “You have to do the best with what God gave you.”

   “I don’t know if we each have a destiny, or if we’re all just floatin’ around accidental-like on a breeze. But I, I think maybe it’s both.”

   Forest Gump was nominated for thirteen Academy Awards in 1995 and won six of them -one prime reason to why The Shawshank Redemption was restricted to zero Oscars. It is a story of a dim-witted boy who later grows up to make history in an uncanny way, through a series of accidents and coincident paved the way. Forrest Gump is a bittersweet story which interweaves his lasting love for his childhood beloved neighbour, Jenny (Robin Wright), who is shown struggling to find peace with herself amid tempestuous time in American history of the 1960s – a time of psychedelic and civil unrest.

   Forrest Gump is still an integral part of the modern pop culture as it was for the 1990s and early 2000s with all those notable quotes and references. We still find it hard to go through one week without someone somewhere making a Forrest Gump reference in our lives. How great is the movie? I guess great enough to have a national restaurant chain like Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. Named after some character with a minimal role in a movie. Yeah, this great is Forrest Gump!!!

10. Pulp Fiction

    If you are wondering why you are not seeing any Tarantino movies on this list, it is because we have included them in other sections (just a hint:3 Tarantino movies in Best Action Movies on Netflix) but as a proof to you all that we still have our minds intact, we have included Pulp Fiction here although it has been featured already in other division, to be honest, we could never miss Tarantino’s greatest accomplishment in this list. No other movie has been able to create its language and folklore of coolness as Pulp Fiction – Tarantino has passed his passion zeal into a collage in this movie, a zeal for being both wickedly funny and unexpectedly thoughtful. John Travolta still crackles, the dialogues still explode and the soundtrack still chants. Pulp Fiction is a comedy about violence, drugs, blood, strange sex, guts, fixed fights, dead body disposal which interweaves four stories of ferocity and exoneration through the stories of two hitmen, a boxer, a gangster’s wife, and a pair of muggers. Even if you have already watched this movie, you still can’t recall what is coming next – such is its nonlinearity. One of the best 154 delightful minutes with no trace of observation, condescendence, and political correctness. Pulp Fiction is an affluently mastered movie of linked crime community – the KING KONG of crime movies to be fair, an absolutely cool movie that will make the top spots in any list of great movies of all time. All hail the master Tarantino!!

11. The Shawshank Redemption

    The Shawshank Redemption is adapted from “Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption” by Stephen King (Déjà vu? Here’s another one from the writer of “The Shining”.) Screenplay and directed by Frank Darabont is clearly one of the greatest classic movies of all time which create a warm grip on our emotions, for it makes us a member of the family within the story. There are many movies which present to us a vicarious experience and superficial, and quick emotions, but this one here slows down and holds. It utilizes the calm and observant voice of the narrator to embrace us as the part in the story for building a different community behind bars. Every other film seems to be shallow when compared; this story is about the progression in a lifetime which is based on hope and friendship. An interesting thing about the movie is even though that the hero is the convicted murderer Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins), a former banker, the story is never recognized from his point of view. Opening scenes in the movies shows that Andy have been given two life sentences for killing (?)his wife and her lover, and it is Ellis ‘Red’ Redding (Morgan Freeman) who is our surrogate, he is the one who we identify, and we fall in love with the redemption shown in the movie. There are some very great dialogues in the movie which we can relate very passionately in our life – “I guess it comes down to a simple choice, really. Get busy living or get busy dying” and “Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies” just to name a few.

    But what’s key to the film structure is that it is not about its main protagonist, but is about our relationship with him, our admiration, our curiosity, and our pity. If Andy was to be the heroic center with some magnanimous charisma, the film would have been a platitudinous one and less gripping. But it makes us wonder about this character – did he really murdered those people? Why is he so introvert? Why can he stroll like a free man around the prison yard, when every other person in there is plodding and creeping? Nominated for seven Oscars in 1995 but successful in none but is clearly the greatest movie to miss out on Oscars. Most of you must have already watched this movie but is a recent addition to Netflix and if you haven’t watched it then, well here is a chance. Grab it!

    What a year 1994 seems, for it has top 3 movies in this list competing for the top spot! I might as well start my Time Machine to get myself back to the year to relive the moment as they happen!!
