McLaughlin was raised in Carmel, New York, where he studied at Kent Primary School. Later on, he went to George Fischer Middle School for a year. He joined the Happy Feet Dance School to learn dance for a year.
After finishing studying dance, he continued his studies at The Harlem School of the Arts under Aubrey Lynch, the previous Lion King producer.

McLaughlin began his acting career by playing as a child was in the opera Lost in the Start at the Glimmerglass Opera House. He had his first starring role as Young Simba on Broadway from 2012-2014.
2016 was the year that proved to be life-changing for Caleb McLaughlin as he went on to cast on Netflix’s blockbuster series Stranger Things. After a year, he won the BET YoungStars Award and NAACP Image Awards the following year.
In 2020, he made this movie debut in Concrete Cowboy alongside his c-stars Idris Elba and Jharrel Jerome.
